Renault Mégane II

Renault’s Mégane provides
the best value for money in it's class

In December 2001, Renault will launch a new Mégane range in all body designs except Scénic. An extended list of features characterizes this new range, as well as the arrival of new technologies such as the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and changes to appearance. Where engines are concerned, the dynamic 2.0 16V (F4R) appears in the Coupé and Cabriolet versions as a replacement for the 2.0 16V idE (F5R). With a wider range and the introduction of special versions providing strong customer advantages, Mégane is positioned as offering the best value for money in its class.

The widest range in the segment

The Mégane family (apart from Scénic), with its five body styles (hatchback, Classic, Estate, Coupé and Cabriolet) represents the most complete range in the compact family car segment, in France and in Europe. Within the context of an extremely competitive market, and with the aim of responding even better to customer needs, the month of December 2001 will see Mégane increase its attractiveness by offering, among other things, the most competitive value for money.

Features to improve safety and travelling comfort

Safety, active as well as passive, has been the foundation of the Mégane project since its inception. Nominated as the safest car in its segment by the independent Euro-NCAP (European New Car Assessment Program) consortium, the Renault Mégane range offers even in its entry-level versions ABS braking including electronic proportioning (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), front and side airbags for the driver and front passenger, close-contact head restraints, programmed-restraint safety belts, and safety belts with pretensioners and load limiters for the outboard rear seats.

With this new range, Mégane will also include as standard in certain versions the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) first introduced in Laguna II.

ESP dynamic driving control, together with ASR traction control, is also available as an option with all body types.

For better travelling comfort, two different GPS satellite navigation systems are now available for Mégane (except the Cabriolet).

Offered for the Mégane range since June 2001, the first, Carminat Real Time Navigation, amounts to an electronic co-pilot. It indicates to the driver, in real time, the position of the car on a road map complete with other information such as street names, distance and time of journey, one-way streets, railway stations, airports, hospitals, etc … displayed on a wide colour screen built into the dashboard. This apart, it is the only system which at the same time offers Info Trafic. As its name indicates, this system informs the driver regarding road traffic conditions (hold-ups, accidents, road works, alternative routes, etc …).

Unveiled in Twingo at the end of 2000, the new Carminat Guidance navigation system is now also available for Mégane.

In both systems, a voice synthesizer function makes for easier use and safety.

A complete range of engines

In addition to its wide range of body designs, Mégane also offers a huge choice of petrol and diesel engines. In all, there are four multivalve petrol engines (95bhp 1.4 16V, 110bhp 1.6 16V, 118bhp 1.8 16V and 140bhp 2.0 16V) and two direct-injection turbodiesels (80bhp 1.9 dTi and 105bhp common-rail 1.9 dCi).

In the Coupé and Cabriolet versions, the 2.0 16V (F4R) engine will make its appearance in January 2002, replacing the 2.0 16V idE, which is now fitted to the Laguna range. By introducing the 2.0 16V (F4R) engine in the “image” versions of the Mégane range, the Coupé and Cabriolet, Renault provides an attractive product at an extremely competitive price (lower by EUR1,300 for the Coupé and by EUR1,200 for the Cabriolet). This high-performance engine, with variable valve timing by means of a camshaft variator, combines torque at low speeds with power at high speeds. It benefits from the latest technologies of combustion and the reduction of friction losses, resulting in a significant reduction in fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Combined with a close-ratio gearbox (JC5), for a more dynamic response (0-100 kph in 8.6sec), it enables these two versions to offer more sporting driving, fully in keeping with their positioning.

Thus the new Mégane range consists of 18 petrol versions and 7 diesel versions.

Styling changes

  • Mégane’s external appearance has gently evolved. New wheel trims and new alloy wheels have made their appearance.

  • Body-coloured door handles and protective side mouldings are available as standard or as an option according to version.

  • The interior design has also noticeably evolved to make travelling in this new range even more of a pleasure.

  • New upholsteries advantageously exploit mixtures of richer materials (cloth/velour, cloth/leather) and thereby create different interior impressions evoking warmth, refinement, and sportiness.

  • Several trim items have also evolved, for better perceived quality: notably the interior door handles, which have been given a satin aluminium finish, and a new appearance for the dashboard, now in very dark grey.

  • Finally, where the Coupé and Cabriolet are concerned, the Privilège version matches the colour of the leather upholstery to the body colour. On the Cabriolet, the colour of the hood is also matched to the body colour.

A restructured range

To mark these changes, the Mégane range has been restructured to provide 17 possible variations.

According to body type, three special and highly equipped versions, Air, Fairway and Sport Way, make their appearance in order to provide a better response to customer needs.
